  • Lawn bowls is a diplomatic game which tests one’s abilities. The balls are commonly known as bowls or woods.
  • It is played on a bowling green which may be flat or convex or uneven. It is normally played outdoors and the outdoor surface is either natural grass, artificial turf.
  • Though bowls look round, they’re not symmetrical. One side is shaved down so that the bowl travels in a curve. The bulkier side is known as the “bias”.

Lawn Bowls Tips.

  • The objective of the game is to get as many of your bowls as close as possible to the small jack.
  • Build up a variety of lawn bowls techniques to improve your chances of landing right next to the jack.
  • Your strongest hand should be holding the ball. Observe and feel the ball — one side should be flattered and other side should be slightly heavier.
  • Position your middle finger along the running edge of the ball. This is the line directly between the face of the bias and the shaved sides.
  • Your finger helps to guide and assist the bowl. Use your thumb and index finger to keep the bowl stable on each side.
  • Try positioning your body more like an archer’s, one foot a little in front of the other and shoulders angled slightly. Suddenly your hips aren’t in the way.
  • Roll a stronger shot if you’re trying a more direct tactic. Aim slightly to the right if you’re curving left into the jack. Flip the bowl in your hand to curl in the reverse direction.
  • When you move your arm as a controlled unit, you’ll get a true pendulum swing, with much better weight control.

Lawn Bowls Tricks.

  • Keep your shoulders square to that line as you swing.
  • Bend your legs and roll the ball smoothly onto the green.
  • Lean your free arm against your leg to keep yourself steady and accurate.
  • Roll the bowl very hard to make a drive shot. Throw hard to eliminate the curve as much as possible.
  • Take a consistent mat position. Each time you deliver a bowl, step onto the same spot on the mat.
  • When there’s no other way around an obstacle, you can stretch one foot out to the side while keeping the other foot on the mat.
  • Knocking your opponent’s bowls out of the way will increase your score.
  • Practice a few shots to get a feel for the speed of the green. Short or wet grass means faster bowls.
  • Aim for easier targets first. For example, if two opponent balls are close together, then it is an easier target than one ball.
